About

Karla Kash is an Associate Professor/Director of the Theatre. Karla is honored to be amongst the talented team at Heidelberg University. Professor Kash has taught full-time at the collegiate level at Iowa State University, Drake University, University at Albany (SUNY), and Saginaw Valley State University. Professor Kash spent a decade as the head of the B.F.A. Musical Theatre Program at Drake University, where she was a tenured Associate Professor.

Ms. Kash is a professional actor, director, choreographer, fight director, intimacy director, producer, and theatre educator. Karla played Barbara in August: Osage County, a joint production between Repertory Theatre of Iowa and StageWest. Ms. Kash played Susan in the musical [title of show]; Becca in Rabbit Hole and Haley in the one-woman show Bad Dates for StageWest. For Des Moines Onstage, she played Diane in Next to Normal. Karla’s favorite she played is Josie in O’Neill’s A Moon for the Misbegotten.

Ms. Kash has performed, directed, choreographed,  fight directed, and intimacy directed professionally in China, Italy, New York, California, Arizona, Michigan, Illinois, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Ohio, Iowa, and South Dakota. The theatre companies Karla has worked with are North Coast Rep, Old Globe Theatre San Diego, La Jolla Playhouse, Coronado Playhouse, Woman’s Repertory Theatre, Isadora Productions, New London Barn Playhouse, Atlantic Theatre Company, Des Moines Playhouse, the Stephen Sondheim Center. Diversionary Theatre, Black Box Theatre, Fritz Theatre, Renaissance Theatre Company, Black Hills Playhouse, Tent Theatre, Pyramid Theatre Company, Iowa State, Repertory Theatre of Iowa, StageWest Theatre Company, and Des Moines Onstage.

Ms. Kash received the 2014 Madelyn Levitt Mentor of the year award at Drake University, which she credits as the most significant honor of her career. Karla is a member of the Actor's Equity Association, the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and The Society of American Fight Directors through which she has been certified in six weapons.

Professor Kash earned her B.F.A. in Acting with an emphasis in Dance, Directing, and Musical Theatre from Wright State University and her M.F.A. in Acting with an emphasis on Classical Theatre and Movement from Brandeis University.

Professor Kash is trained in mental health first aid and is undergoing certification to teach the Michael Chekhov technique.
